The Board of Governors made the decision to change the tenure requirement for initial Fellow advancement from three years to one year. The decision comes with the full support of the Membership Committee, who first considered the change last fall. While the Board discussed the change then, more information was requested for them to feel fully confident that the change was in keeping with the goals and standards for board certification. In their final discussion, the Board differentiated the requirements addressing our profession’s commitment to core values, such as lifelong learning and integrity, and the rigor evidenced through leadership experience and competencies from the time required as a Member of ACHE. They determined the tenure requirement, while important, can be changed effective Jan. 1, 2021.

Becoming board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of ACHE is one of the most recognized and respected symbols of a leader’s competency and commitment to healthcare management excellence. This change to the membership tenure requirement in no way diminishes the importance of an individual’s ongoing commitment to the core values demonstrated by our current Fellows every day. Rather, we hope this change will make Fellow status possible for more of our Members who wish to attain this important leadership level.

Although the membership tenure requirement was adjusted, the other requirements for a Member to obtain their FACHE credential remain the same:

• Hold an advanced degree (a master’s or other post-baccalaureate degree).
• Have a minimum of five years of healthcare management experience and hold an executive healthcare management position.
• Obtain two references, including one from a current Fellow or organizational senior leader.
• Complete a minimum of 36 continuing education hours within the last three years; 12 hours must be ACHE Face-to-Face Education.
• Complete four volunteer activities within the last three years, including two healthcare-related activities and two community/civic activities.
• Pass the Board of Governors Exam. 

For current Fellows, the requirements to recertify have not changed.
